Hidden Mesa Open Space Hike

Although we got a late morning start to the TH, my wife, JoAnn and I were both anxious to get outside on a mild late October Saturday.  The drive down state highway #83 proved there was some remaining fall color in he stands of Aspen south of Parker city limits.

Hidden Mesa Open Space is located on highway #83 about 7 miles south of Parker city limits, on land where an old homestead once thrived.  One structure, a boarded up residence, is all that remains.

There is a dirt parking area surrounded by a post and rail log fence.  A picnic shelter and port-a-john complete services provided at the TH.

Educational Note:  Adjacent to the TH is a demonstration orchard and berry patch. The project is a joint effort by the Colorado Agricultural Leadership Foundation and Douglas County Government with assistance from Colorado State University Extension and Master Gardeners.

Research, demonstration, and educational areas focus on testing and displaying fruit and nut species, varieties, and cultivation methods adaptable to Douglas County climate.

The 1,294 acre Open Space has been preserved by the town of Castle Rock and Douglas County Open Space, ensuring no future development on the tract.  Trails are open to bikers, runners, hikers, dogs on leash, and equestrian traffic.

The dirt path (Farm Lane) from the TH leads .5 mi. to Cherry Creek.  Just beyond the bridge over the creek is a junction with the paved Cherry Creek Trail.  There we turn right following the pavement .3 mi. to a junction with Hidden Mesa Trail.  We continue another .3 mi. to the edge of the Open Space tract, then return to the junction.

Hidden Mesa Trail begins flat, then starts a gradual climb toward the mesa.  The 1.4 mile section of trail gets steep as it nears the top but the climb is brief.  On top of the mesa we rehydrate, enjoy the view of the lower elevations, before starting back down slope.

Back on the paved trail, we encounter one quiet prairie dog beside trail.  It stands tall atop it's burrow as we approach.  As we pass by the critter finally breaks its focus on us and bolts into its den below ground.

Total Miles = 5.0

Total Elevation Gain = 436'
