A Day Together

'Twas the day before Xmas
and all thru the house
not a tree, nor strand of garland could be found inside
- not one ounce

she in her parka and me in my Broncos cap
ventured out for the day
following a splendid Colorado nights nap
A walk in the backcountry inspires mind body and soul.

with cocoa mix in zip bags
and fresh water to make hot
we jumped in the vehicle
that transports us a lot

 it's four big tires humming
and shiny black color, oh my
we sped down Parker Road, in the blink of an eye

by Parkway, and Mainstreet, and Franktown we'd pass
that old '95 Toyota still purrs, alas
we were thrilled and elated to be on our way
to another trailhead on this beautiful winters' day

the cinch of a daypack, and with poles in hand
down the Homestead Trail we trekked
to enjoy this magnificant canyon land
A rocky climb and descent on Rim Rock Trail

little snow, standing water, or mud would slow us
only a prarie hawk and blue sky above us
the climb up Castlewood Canyon, it was grand
only this morning did we make a plan

on top the sun would spread its warm air
to be overwhelmed by gusty winds up there
oh, the sights, the serenity, and solitude we'd find
it was all we could ask for the body, soul, and mind

on approach the canyons' rim
wait! is that a stone-shaped gargoyle,
dressed in red plus white beard, how trim

Atop Castlewood Canyon, with our friend, Gargoyle Santa.
on the scrub oak close-by hangs lights unglowing
that wind it's a killer...we must be going
yonder pine appears a good place to break
a bit of protection, that's all it would take
the trusty stove, in minutes water would boil
thru our lips flowed hot chocolate without any toil

A cup of hot cocoa tasted ooohhh so good.
to record our day was a Canon Rebel XT
10 seconds or less to be positioned with she
two happy souls on trail, it's true
no better way to enjoy horizions hue

our return to the truck went as planned
a bit faster, sure, with winds at our back we were slammed
now at the trailhead, oh what a day
no aches, pains, or discomfort would bother us today
On descent from the rim.

the drive home interrupted but once
for a stop at fresh food store...Sprouts
zucchini squash, french bread and chicken we would tout

then to the house with it's welcoming appeal
no warmer, or comfy, or happy could we be
two souls on lifes' journey, you see.
